Spain Travel Guide: Madrid, Barcelona and a First Week

Spain can be a city break, a coastal stay or a longer regional journey. This first-week guide connects Madrid with Barcelona, giving each city its own time rather than using a short visit to collect as many destinations as possible.

Choose the trip you want

Madrid and Barcelona offer a useful city-and-culture introduction. If Andalusia, an island or a beach resort is your priority, build the route around that instead. Every extra base adds packing and travel; begin with two places and add time before adding another region.

Madrid for art, squares and a slower city day

Combine one chosen museum with a walk, a meal and time in a park. The Prado area, Retiro and the older centre offer different kinds of outing. Choose the visit that interests you, then group the rest of the day nearby rather than reserving several distant entrances.

Barcelona for neighbourhoods and architecture

Give a Gaudí landmark, a historic-quarter walk and the seafront separate space. They do not have to fit into one continuous sightseeing circuit. Compare a booked interior with a walk outside and decide which experiences deserve your budget and time.

Count the whole train journey

Check the actual service, stations, ticket terms and luggage arrangements before booking. Include checkout, hotel-to-station travel and the next hotel arrival. Even a fast intercity train uses part of a holiday day; avoid a timed attraction immediately after an uncertain connection.

Choose the hotel by your daily route

Look at the actual entrance, lift, transport and nearby food options. A central label does not explain the walk with bags or the journey to your first activity. Ask about late check-in and storage if arrival or departure falls outside normal room-access times.

Make the departure gateway part of the plan

The suggested week arrives in Madrid and finishes in Barcelona. If your tickets return from Madrid, plan the return leg and revise the final night. Keep meals, neighbourhood walks and a weather alternative flexible around the bookings that matter most.

Common questions

Can Madrid and Barcelona fit a week?
Yes as a suggested two-base route, with arrival, the rail transfer and departure included. Flight times decide how many full city days remain.
Should I add another region to the same week?
It creates another transfer and reduces city time. Replace a base or extend the visit if the new region is a priority.
Does this plan assume a particular return airport?
It ends in Barcelona. A flight from Madrid or elsewhere needs an explicitly revised final leg and possibly a different last night.
