Spain in 7 Days: Madrid and Barcelona by Two City Bases
This suggested week assumes arrival in Madrid and departure from Barcelona. Three nights in each city leave room for full city days and a separate rail move. Change the final leg if your actual tickets use a different departure gateway.
Day 1: arrive in Madrid
Reach the accommodation and keep the first outing nearby. Confirm check-in and take a meal or short walk if convenient. Leave a priority museum for a full day rather than a time slot that depends on an exact arrival.
Days 2–3: art and another city perspective
Give one day to a chosen art visit with Retiro or a nearby walk, and another to the older centre or a different interest. These are flexible themes, not a requirement to reserve every site. Include meals and rest between the major stops.
Day 4: travel to Barcelona
Check the actual train and station details, include checkout and the transfer, then settle into the next hotel. A short neighbourhood walk can fit afterwards. Avoid a ticketed attraction whose timing assumes the journey and room arrival are both immediate.
Day 5: one architectural priority
Choose the Gaudí experience you most want and book the specific visit through the venue. Add a nearby meal and a manageable city walk. A second paid visit is optional, not a reason to shorten the experience you came for.
Day 6: historic streets or the sea
Choose a historic-quarter day, a seafront outing or another coherent interest. Leave the sequence adaptable to weather and energy. A distant excursion would replace this day rather than fit on top of every other activity.
Day 7: depart from the actual airport
Use the correct airport and terminal and work from the airline’s arrival guidance. Arrange luggage storage for a later flight if needed. If you fly home from Madrid, plan the return journey explicitly and consider moving the final night instead of relying on a tight connection.
