Florence Travel Guide: Art, the Arno and Two Unhurried Days
Florence is not only a list of galleries. Give an art visit the attention it deserves, then leave room for squares, bridges, food and the other side of the river. Two full days can introduce the city without filling every hour.
Begin around the Duomo
Make the cathedral area the start of a city walk. Decide separately whether you want an interior or a specific booked experience and check the venue’s current ticket details. Leave enough space around it for the streets and squares rather than rushing straight to another queue.
Choose a priority art visit
Select the Uffizi, the Accademia or another collection according to your interests and available time. Read the official booking and entry arrangements. Buying two museum tickets for the same crowded day is not a substitute for deciding what you most want to see.
Give the Arno and Oltrarno their own time
A walk around Ponte Vecchio and into Oltrarno offers a different part of the visit. Add a meal or café stop and allow for the group’s walking ability. If a viewpoint is part of the plan, check the approach and return rather than treating it as an effortless extra.
Choose a practical room in a historic city
Ask about the entrance, lift, stairs and access with luggage. Compare station convenience with the walks you want from the hotel. A central room can still involve a difficult arrival if the entrance or check-in arrangement has not been clarified.
Do not turn every spare day into an excursion
An outing into Tuscany can be worthwhile, but it replaces city time. Choose the actual town or activity and compare a direct journey with a multi-stop tour. Confirm the return and avoid using the excursion as a tight connection to an evening flight.
Plan departure before the final walk
Check the station or airport on the ticket and arrange luggage storage if needed. A last meal or short local walk can fit a later departure; a distant activity may not. Keep a buffer for returning to the property and reaching the correct departure point.
