Seven days in Thailand
A week is enough for one good trip, as long as you resist adding a second region. Bangkok plus one coast, or Bangkok plus the north — not both.
Days 1 to 2 — Bangkok
Land, sleep, and give the city two full days. That is enough for the Grand Palace and Wat Pho, the river, one market and one evening of proper food.
Do not schedule a day trip to Ayutthaya on a seven-day trip. It is a good day out, but it costs you a Bangkok day you do not have.
Day 3 — the transfer
This is the day most itineraries pretend does not exist. Flying to Krabi, Phuket or Samui, or taking the train north to Chiang Mai, takes most of it.
Accept it, and arrive somewhere you can walk to dinner from.
Days 4 to 6 — one coast, or the north
Three full days in one place is where the trip pays off.
- On the Andaman coast: one island day trip, one beach day, one day of doing nothing much. That is the correct use of a Thai beach.
- On the Gulf: same shape, with Ang Thong or Koh Tao as the day out.
- In the north: the old city temples, Doi Suthep, and one full day out of the city — an elephant sanctuary or Doi Inthanon.
- If you want a city rather than a beach, Ayutthaya fits here instead, as an overnight.
Day 7 — back to Bangkok
Return the day before your flight, not on the day of it. Domestic delays are not rare, and the two Bangkok airports are 30 km apart — a same-day connection between them is a gamble.
What this plan deliberately leaves out
Chiang Mai and the islands together, Ayutthaya, the Golden Triangle, and Koh Phangan. Each is worth doing; none of them fits in a week without turning the holiday into a coach tour.
